2010: Year of In His Name

Here we are at the end of 2009 and stand looking into 2010.  We have been so blessed by the activities and mission weeks this past year that words can’t even convey our gratitude.  I do know this: I give thanks to Jesus Christ our Lord for all you have done– those of you who have come along side the ministry through your presence, your prayer and your contributions.  We could not have accomplish our mission goals without you.

I know that gratitude is often a repeated subject in this blog, but I say that you can never have too much gratitude.  And gratitude brings joy.

I awoke this morning with a smile on my face and thinking about our mission weeks to come in 2010!  This summer we are planning on  four weeks of mission In His Name.  One week will be a travel mission — we will be going to God’s Country Cooperative in the Eastern UP with a team to work.  The remaining three will be here in the Keweenaw.

If everything works out we will be blessed with two groups from the state of Wisconsin and one group from “under the bridge” — downstate Michigan.  So far I know that we will be finishing up on the Liberty Street Project, helping another family with renovations to their home, including siding it, and also providing renovation assistance to another family whose home also needs repair including to the roof.  While there is much work to be done and I can envision it, in truth I can hardly wait to meet you all.

And for those of you who have been asking –  we are going to stage a reunion group — finally — to side Larry’s house.

Yes — that same Larry.  You know the one who is our lead guitarist and contractor guy who helps everyone else, works assisting those in need with his regular contracting work.  He gives so much of himself that he doesn’t have the  time, etc., to work on his own home.  S0, we will gather a group of the willing to side his home which has stood un-sided as he works on everyone else’s home.  So if you are interested in participating contact me: jcrowl[at]mac.com. This will definitely be a great week like all the others.

So as we prepare for the 2010 weeks I am asking for prayer from you.  The months and weeks that lead to a mission week are every bit as important as the actual mission week itself. There is planning and physical preparation and fundraising.   Please pray for cheerful and careful preparation not only for those activities, but especially for all our hearts.  Pray that all who prepare and work will experience His redeeming presence in their lives — taking each one a step nearer to a closer relationship to Jesus all for the glory of God.

Let’s see if I can get this straight this time — hopefully my “oldtimers” will not act up!

Merry Christmas and God Bless You Real Good!

We have sailed through the season of Advent! The anticipation is at its maximum.   We have arrived at Christmas Eve.  Once again Jesus,  the man that the world has been talking about for over 2000 years, will come as a babe to be with us. The world seems to stop revolving for just a minute and holds its breath for this wonderful, wonderful happening.

Emmanuel, God with us.  Emmanuel, God with us.  Christ is born.  Our Lord and Savior beside us.  The lamb that will save us and save the world. Praise God.

All of us at Amazing Grace Ministries of the Keweenaw wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and offer our best for a blessed 2010.  We give thanks for you and all that you have given — your offerings, your prayer and the wonderful work your have done while in mission with us.  We are looking forward to an active 2010 with the potential  for four weeks of mission — one away from the Keweenaw to the the Eastern UP and three here at home.  God has graced us with the opportunity to go out in his name.  We look forward to being with you and working with you.

Advent Thoughts; This Weekend

ADVENT THOUGHTS

Let it snow, let it snow, and more snow. That (for our non-Keweenaw readers) is what is happening in the Copper Country. It is beautiful and it is alot. We have had as of yesterday 46 inches of snow since Dec 1. And more fell last night. More is forecast for today and the following days.

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. On the outside. Let’s look at the inside. Is it looking like Christmas in your heart, or is this a bah-humbug time year for you? To keep it short, it doesn’t matter what the stores are doing (although it would be nice to hear and see Merry Christmas). It doesn’t matter what your neighbor, or the schools or whoever is doing in the name of the season. Stick with me here. What does matter is what is in your heart. Have you chosen Jesus as your Lord and as your Savior? Are you once again renewing and preparing a place for Him in your heart? What a gift! John 3:16 — For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. What a gift. Prepare the way today!

SCHEDULE

We’re always optimistic that we can get out and keep our Praise Band schedule. Recently because of the snow that has not been the case. Pray that we can get out and sing to residents of:

Houghton County Medical Care Facility at 2 p.m. on Saturday

Portage Pointe Facility at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

PRAYER

For the family of Ralph, who passed away this week.

For safe travel for Julie and Cherilynn who will be meeting up with board member Tami in Green Bay today.

For Mike as he navigates the snow drifts on his mail route

For Esther as she battles cancer

For Anita as she has completed the rigorous part of her cancer treatment. Heal sister, heal!

For Charlie as he battles cancer

For Gary for recovery from surgery

For recovering Alcoholics

For revival in this land that the youth of our country will return to God, Jesus and the church

God Bless!

Quick Schedule Reminder, Housekeeping

Just a quick reminder that we are singing at Cypress Manor this Saturday at 3 p.m.   We get to sing Christmas songs along with praise songs.  Great way to praise Jesus.

Also, I received an e-mail asking that I not mention my personal health issues and recovery on this blog.  The person is correct.  This blog is about the ministry and Jesus.  My apologies to all.  If you wish to be updated about me personally please e-mail me at jcrowl[at]mac.com. ‘Nuff said.

Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart

Happy Thanksgiving to all our readers. In America we have been celebrating Thanksgiving since 1863 when President Lincoln’s issued a proclamation establishing Thanksgiving Day.

At AGMK we do have much to be thankful for this year.  We give thanks for the WI-Vim group who was our first mission team of 2009.  We also are so thankful for The Lord of Life mission team who worked with us during our second week of mission at the Liberty Street Project and elsewhere.  Thank you, thank you and thank you.  You all have blessed us in so many ways.  We are grateful for our relationships that continue through our connections through twitter, facebook, email, phone and snail mail.

We are so thankful for those of you who support us in mission away from here and at  our local sites.  Thank you, thank you.

We are especially thankful that the 107th returned safely to the UP from their year in Afghanistan.   We welcome Bryan home (he has worked with AGMK on a number of projects from the very start of the ministry).  We wish him well as he returns to NMU complete his college degree.

And we give thanks that we are able to worship the living Lord and Savior  freely without constraint because brave men and women like those in the 107th.  We give thanks and wish you God’s Blessings today.

Catching Up, New Floor & Volunteering

My oh my, time sure does get away from you when you are healing from major surgery.  After a bad week (I had a fight with the bedcovers one night and they won, twisting my knee), I am doing better.  It is almost seven weeks since my surgery.  Tomorrow I will join the band as we sing at Bay Side Village in L’Anse for a “test drive” of my new knee.

Today Dan and I ventured out on a very important mission.  Earlier this week Robin and Brian (the owners of the Liberty St. home) selected the flooring for the addition.  It will be going into the girls’ rooms.  So today I went over to Kirkish Furniture and paid for it.  I am so excited! And Linda the salesperson was so helpful. Now it is only a matter of time and the floor will be down and the new furniture will be delivered.  I can almost see it all  in place.

VOLUNTEERING

Today as I was putting together the October newsletter for my church — Grace UMC in Houghton, MI — it occurred to me I can add part of an article from there onto this blog.  It is about volunteering and here is a list of  reasons “why volunteer”.   These axioms come from my personal experience and also from those folks who were in mission with us this summer.   They are:

•    To demonstrate your commitment and beliefs: to be a change agent
•    To get to know each other, make new friends
•    Because Christ tells us to pick up the cross and follow Him
•    To answer a call to your community responsibilities
•    For the pure joy of it.
•    Because you were asked
•    To keep busy, to test yourself
•    To repay a debt
•    Because there is no one else to do it
•    To donate your skills, to keep your skills alive, and to learn a new skill
•    To feel needed, to increase your confidence
•    To celebrate being part of our community
•    To help, to have an impact, create progress
•    To be challenged, make a difference, to create new programs
•    To explore a potential new career or hobby
•    To feel proud, to stand up and to be counted
•    To do something different than from your job
•    For fun, and to feel alive

If you haven’t volunteered at your local church please take this opportunity.  Or, if you would like to volunteer with us as we work in the Copper Country contact us as jcrowl[at]mac.com or mdaisy[at]up.net.  And a thanks goes all who have volunteered with us through the years.

THE DISTRICT UMW MEETING & MYSTERY TRIP

Don’t you just love it.  Next Saturday we will be joining our district’s United Methodist Women’s at their annual conference.  We are really looking forward to being with them.  I have so enjoyed working with my gracious and efficient contact Susan.  So look for us on Saturday afternoon at Gwinn UMC at 1 - 2 p.m.  We’ll be doing what we love to do — singing and talking about mission.

Oh, and then most of us will continue on for a Mystery Trip.  And the Mystery Trip got even better when I was in my fourth day group on Thursday and one of the members will meet up with us for part of the experience.  Ah - ha.  God just knows how wonderful to make things.  And I have enjoyed meeting — by phone — the next link in our connections for the trip.

However, like Pastor Tom says “I’ve been herding cats”!  Honestly it keeps me jumping (figuratively) and alive — LOL.

OCTOBER SCHEDULE

I’ll issue it next week.  We might have a trip to a more western area in the UP at the end of the month.

Progress Continues on Liberty Street, Knee & More

I’m back.  Tomorrow is three weeks since my knee replacement surgery.  Recovery has been pretty rigorous, with some hilltops and some valleys.  Little by little I can assume daily life skills that other folks have been doing for me as I have been working on my recovery.  No, my work is not finished, this is definitely a work in progress.  The two best things about my new knee?  The first is I don’t have the constant pain I had before it was replaced and 2)it doesn’t hurt to put weight on my knee — it is no longer bone on bone.  Ah…And thank you to all the wonderful folk who have prepared meals, visited and provided the beautiful flowers.

LIBERTY STREET, AND MORE…

Mike, Brian, Robin and others continue their work on the Liberty Street Project.  Brian called last week to ask about the purchase of polyurethane for the floors that have been sanded.  He has finished the soffit and fascia.  Other work is taking place on the walls in the original structure and also the addition.  They have been installing the shower in the new bathroom and finishing that chore.  Ah… we are closer and closer to being finished.

The Tri-mountain roof is finished and that is a job well done by Mike, Ron, Eric and friends. The Albion Location Ramp is completed.

In their spare time (?) Mike and Brian have also been helping our friend, Lisa, with her home.  Bathroom repairs.  They have been working in the evening and making progress.  Way to go guys.  Way to go Brian, paying it forward.

SCHEDULE

Tomorrow marks the start of September (where did this summer go — 3 mission experiences, my child growing up, graduating college and moving to Salt Lake City, knee surgery — guess I just answered my own question!).  With September the band portion of the ministry begins to be active once again.  We return to our regular schedule.  Or should I say the guys return to the regular schedule since I am unable to join them until October.  So here is what’s happening:

Saturday, Sept. 5th  Cypress Manor 3 p.m.

Saturday, Sept 12th, Houghton County, 2 p.m.

Sunday, Sept 13th, Portage Pointe, 3 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 27th, Bay Side Village, L’Anse;  Julie’s driveway 1:30 p.m., sing at 2:30 p.m.

Friday, October 2, Gwinn (Up North Lodge) and the UMW District Meeting Dinner at 6 p.m.

Saturday, October 3, Gwinn UMC, UMW District Meeting, Sing and Share 1 - 2 p.m.

Sat/Sun/Mon Oct 3 late afternoon, 4, 5 Band Mystery Trip

Thanks to Dr. Leetun for my new Knee and his staff for their great care

Lift up Lisa and Mike

Pray for healing of Geof’s hand

For the band to reach hearts and minds for Jesus

That’s all for now,

Thank You Lord of Life

The Lord of Life Team made it safely back to Il from what I can tell from Alex’s twitter report.  What a wonderful group and what wonderful progress was made on the project.

Did I ever tell you how we end our weeks?  It is wonderful — at least I think so.  We work the final day, closing down our work a littler earlier.  The team goes off and heads for the showers.  Agmk members get ready for a communion service and for a dinner that we will share together.

At the end of this week we had the joy of welcoming Pastor David Goudie to our ranks as he served us communion.  Thank you Pastor David.  We sang and worshiped.  But my very favorite part is when we recognize everyone’s hard work and share a bit about the week.  I was also pleased to say thank you to: Ron, Eric. Autumn and Katelyn who joined us from our home church.  Really, you made all the difference to our work. And Bob, you really did supervise as you worked — LOL!

Then Jan and Larry put on quite the Bar-B-Q and ice cream social.  After eating we circulate and get a chance to chat with most everyone.  Then it’s a group photo and hugs and goodbyes.  Wow!

And this past weekend and today Ron and Eric along with Mike continued work on another site — the Tri-Mountain Project.  I stopped by after lunch time and progress was going along on this re-roofing project.  Good work guys.

We are now looking to put together a couple of crews this fall to work on the Liberty Street Project — finish the flooring, the dry walling and do the plumbing and the bathroom.  We also are looking to put together a crew that will help a family near Mass City.

Let me know if you are interested.

Prayers

For Jerry who had heart surgery

For Bryan who serves in Afghanistan

For me — I’m knee replacement.

For Dr. Leetun who is doing the surgery

For Dan who is a wonderful and caring husband

For Brian and Emily

and for a change in hearts in our country to where we once again have in honor is serving our brothers and sisters — without strings attached.

Day Two and Work Progresses

On day two work progressed very quickly.  Siding has moved to the front of the house, and upward.  The inside rooms and drywall mud applied.   Sanding (go Ron our sander in chief) is moving the projects along so that we can see that primer will be applied today (day three).  Today part of the team has moved into the laundry to put up drywall.   And part of the team will head to Tri-mountain to do roofing on part of a roof of the home of a service verteran.

kyle-david-working Kyle and David are working with siding.

stagging-construction Geiger, Prentice and Gene put together staging.

alex-installs-j-channel Alex installs j-channel around window at the front of the house.

Okay — they are on break now after getting mud and drywall and siding worked on this morning.  Mike is getting ready to take a crew to Tri-mountain.

Prayers

For safety for the team throughout the day and the remainder of the work week.  For Safety for the team that will be roofing this afternoon and tomorrow.

Prayer for Beth who has learned she has cancer.

Prayer for Bryan who is serving in Afghanistan — for safe return to our midst at at the end of his duty and for safety each day.

That’s about it for now.

Note:  We’re in the planning stages for a long work weekend in September in Watersmeet.  We have a family whose home sustained damage in a fire.  We would like to put a team together of 15 to 20 guys willing to get to work to repair the home.  We need at least three (3) licensed contractors to guide the team.  We plan to do drywall and drywall repair, priming, painted, some brick and mortar, and general construction.  It will be a time of work, fellowship and praising the Lord through helping one of his own.
